the campana shaped demi-lobed body with leaf-capped scroll handles, embellished bands of fruiting vines, the lobed and gadrooned domed cover with stylised urn finial, engraved on one side with a coat-of-arms below an earl's coronet, the other with a later inscription to David William Stanley, 8th Earl of Airlie, Brevet Major X Royal Hussars, 1886, By his tenants, neighbours and other friends in the counties of Angus and Perth, in testimony of their respect and admiration of his galant services in Afghanistan and the Soudan'
Condition
Hallmarks and maker's marks to body and cover clear. Light surface wear, the finial with very slight discolouration and a little wear. Very good gauge and overall condition.

‘PRESENTATION TO THE EARL OF AIRLIE
‘LONDON, Wednesday [2 February 1886]
‘Last evening the Earl of Airlie was presented with a sword of honour and a piece of gold plate by his tenantry and friends in the shires at Angus and Perth. The presentation took place at Cortachy Castle, and, in acknowledging the gifts, the Earl said he accepted them as a lasting token of love and esteem which those at home felt for every man, whether private soldier or of superior rank, who had gone through the Soudan war.’
