modelled by Peter Reinicke, for Johann Adolph II Herzog von Weissenfels, standing in a theatrical pose, wearing a black cap, puce-lined black cape, white jacket trimmed in gold, turquoise breeches and black shoes with gold buckles, standing before a tree stump on a mound base applied with flowers, faint blue crossed swords mark to base.

Condition

There is some restoration to left arm and cuff and to fingers and to the right hand. Minor flaking to enamels and minor chip to applied flower on base.

Catalogue Note

Reinicke's work book refers in June 1744 to '1 Scarmuz in Thon bossirt', [1 Scaramouche modelled in clay], see Chilton, op. cit., p. 18. Two versions of the figure were modelled where the pose is altered slightly and it is unclear which the entry refers to. An example of both figures were in the collection of Giovanni and Gabriella Barilla, sold in these rooms, 14th March 2012, lots 132 and 139.
