Catalogue Note
Engraved with the arms of Hollingworth of Cheshire quartering another, possibly Green of Alkley, Notts.
The Hollingworth family were Lords of the Manor of Hollingworth in Longdendale from the mid-13th century until the early 18th century, and were the most prominent and influential family in the area for more than five centuries.
Captain Robert Hollingworth JP DL (1791-1865), who served in India with the Dragoon Guards, claimed to be a descendant of the original Lords of the Manor. Upon his return from service in 1831 he conveyed the family estate (Hollingworth Hall) from the family of Daniel Whittle, who had purchased it via another from Robert's grandfather in 1800.
