Catalogue Note
Johann Aufenwerth decorated Meissen porcelain from 1718 onwards. He was later joined by his daughters Anna Elisabeth and Sabina Aufenwerth who continued the decorating workshop after their father's death in 1728. For a discussion on the painter and other wares by him see Siegfried Ducret, Meißner Porzellan bemalt in Augsburg, 1718 bis um 1750, Zurich, 1971, Band II, pp. 7-9, figs. II-III.
A highly related tea service in the Schwerin Landesmuseum, painted by Aufenwerth in the same colour palette as the present piece is illustrated by Pazaurek, op. cit., which features a sugar box of this form, though with four feet instead of six.
