Catalogue Note

This model appears to be after the Bacchus Cup, Meinrad Bauch the Elder, Nuremberg, 1590-1602, in the Waddesdon Bequest at the British Museum. This  impractical vessel would have featured as a courtly drinking game or trinkspiel. Bacchus provides a joking reminder of the dangers of drunkenness, while the Old Testament depictions highlight the fall of man and the importance of brotherhood, fitting imagery in such drinking games of the period.

An example as a nest of beakers within a similar barrel was sold Sotheby's Geneva, 22 November 1978, lot 146.
