Description
- A massive and magnificent ivory tankard, probably German, third quarter of the 19th century
- ivory
- 66cm., 26in. high
carved overall in high relief with a plethora of marine subjects, the barrel with nereids and tritons frolicking with a surprised fisherman, above free-standing figures of melusines among shells and sea weed, the handle composed of several entwined figures surmounted by a putto riding a dolphin, the hinged lid applied with further sprawling putti below the finial formed as a nymph standing among reeds, the interior bordered with a ring of black-incised grapes and vine leaves
Condition
In remarkably good condition considering the extreme fragility of the tankard. There are some losses of fingers, one arm detached, several arms have been re-attached. The base appears to have been temporarily filled in with a stiff plastic sheet. but the actual oval ivory barrel base is intact. Artist joins to border of base have spread slightly. A magnificent and invigorating object.
