the massive cast openwork vine pattern two-handled vase on inscribed and crested shaped square base, the underside stamped: '3059'; the shaped square plateau with matching vine pattern border and four cast shell feet, the underside stamped: 'HUNT & ROSKELL LATE STORR & MORTIMER 8605,' wood underside, frosted glass liner

Condition

Hallmarks clear to underside of body and applied leaf corners. The openwork body is also clearly hallmarked within the cast leaf decoration. There are no obvious losses to the cast leaves on the body, very good gauge and quality. The frosted glass liner with one chip to rim, otherwise good. The mirror plateau with three chips to one corner. A little more wear visible to the mounts as of die-stamped construction. Visible patches to interior although probably within construction. There are a couple of firing splits visible around these points. Overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: ‘Presented to Alexander Findlater Esquire. of Johnstown House, County Dublin, by his partners, whose names are heron inscribed as a token of their respect and esteem for his many excellent qualities May, 29th. 1857. William Todd, John Carmichael, Gilbert Burns, Ivie Mackie, Adam S. Findlater, Henry W. Todd, John F. Corscaden, Thomas Gordon, Bruce B. Todd, Robert Gladstone, John Blood, John Findlater, William Williamson, John Smith, W.T. Mc. Conkey.’

The recipient of this vase was Alexander Findlater (1797-1873), who established the well-known firm of Findlaters, wine merchants, in Dublin in 1823. The business was taken over in 2001 by Cantrell & Cochrane.
