Catalogue Note

Tamara Préaud, op. cit., reproduces a watercolour and pencil design of a plate, dated 1803, which features similar motifs to the present lot. Whilst the artist is unknown the author suggests that it could be work of Charles-Eloi Asselin and notes that a delivery was made to the Emperor on 5th December 1804, consisting of seventy-two plates tortoise-shell ground imitating bronze figures etc, priced at 54 francs each (Register Vbb 2, fol. 6v).

A closely related service was produced with tortoiseshell ground and matching gilded borders but reserving bronzed figures on marbled medallions; two compotiers from the service are now in the collection of Château Fontainebleau, inv. no. F.2014.25.2, F.2014.25.1. A plate almost certainly from the same service as the present lot was sold at Christie's London, 18th December 2006, lot 88, having previously being sold at Christie's New York, 18th October 2002, lot 424; a second plate was sold in the same rooms, 24th April 2002, lot 30.
