Catalogue Note
This painting is rather unusual for Charles-Louis-François Glardon (1825-1887), as the Swiss enameller is most famous for his portraits. A talented draughtsman, he aimed to 'paint on the paste exactly as one paints on a canvas' (Emaux et Miniatures, Musée d'art et d'histoire, Genève, 1955, p. 20) and used photography in order to create a truthful depiction of the world.
