Description

  • A gold-mounted poudre d'écaille boîte à miniature, probably French, circa 1775
  • tortoiseshell, gold
  • 7.6cm., 3in. diameter
circular, the lid with a contemporary miniature,  French school, oil on canvas, depicting  cowherds before a castle, the sides and base with gilded piqué pellets, stamped bead and reed gold rims, tortoiseshell-lined, apparently unmarked apart from later French import mark (ET)

Condition

Some cracks to paint of miniature bottom right. Losses to gilding of most pellets and rubbed surface overalltwo pellets lacking on base and several irregular on sides; glue traces round edges of interior.
