Description

  • A gold snuff box, probably London, circa 1720

  • 8cm., 3 1/8 in. wide
of cartouche form, the lid panel chased with a seated shepherd playing a horn to his dog and flock on a sablé ground, enclosed within a border of chased interlaced strapwork and foliage, plain sides with reeded rims, the base panel engraved circa 1820 with the coat of arms of Neale, co. Northamptonshire, later French control mark

Condition

Hinge pin replaced (lid panel removed and put back, possibly to aid this); base panel sprung. Very fine engraving of arms. Addition of French control mark has split rim.

Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Neale but it is not possible to identify for which branch of the family this box was made as this particular crest with the lion holding an axe rather than sporting an escallop is not apparently recorded.
