- 23.8cm., 9 3/8 in. high
modelled standing wearing a tricorn hat and green coat, holding a tray strapped over his shoulder, painted with his wares including spectacles, scissors and combs balanced upon an ochre-yellow staff, the square base with chamfered corners painted to simulate paving stones,

Catalogue Note
Models of merchants or street vendors are uncommon in Dutch Delft and were inspired by the earlier series of figures produced through the European porcelain factories in the mid-18th century, particularly the Cries de Paris series at Meissen. A related figure was produced at Meissen, and in the English factories referred to as a Jewish Pedlar. A particularly close print, perhaps the source for the present model is Le Marchand juif ambulant by Matthias Salieth (1749-1791), reproduced by Lahaussois, op. cit, fig. 9.
