Catalogue Note
The arms are those of Hope and van der Hoeven for John Hope (1737-1784), also known as Jan Hope, of the Dutch banking family of Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and his wife, Philippina Barbara van der Hoeven (1738-1790), whom he married in 1763. The couple had three sons: Thomas Hope (1769-1831), the art collector and connoisseur, who lived at Deepdene, Surrey; Adrian Elias Hope (1772-1834), also an art collector, who lived at Bosbeek, near Haarlem, and who latterly was confined there in a straightjacket; and Henry Philip Hope (1774-1839), the connoisseur and collector of gems, whose most celebrated possession was the Hope blue diamond. This famous stone is now in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
