  • Four fans, English, Italian and Chinese, 18th century and later
  • ivory, mother of pearl, paper, silver,
comprising an Italian fan, circa 1720, depicting Venus and Adonis, the ivory mounts pierced and painted with flowers and love trophies, 28.5cm., 11 1/2 in.; two English fans, circa 1740, painted with pastoral scenes, the ivory guards and sticks pierced and painted with scrolls, urns and trophies, one with mother-of-pearl inlays, 27cm., 10 5/8 in.; and a Chinese fan, late 18th century, painted with women in a luxurious garden, the reverse with men and women by a river, the mother-of-pearl sticks and guards, probably later, carved and pierced with putti within Rocaille ornament, 29cm., 11 3/8 in.

Condition

1. Remounted and truncated, nice painting however. 2. One English fan with one stick broken, losses to painting on sticks and guards, nice painted leaf but with tear and splits along edges and folds. 3. The other English fan with some restoration to sticks and guards, lacking gilding and painting, nice painted leaf but with tear and splits along edges and folds. 4. Leaf with patches of restoration, tear and splits along folds and edges, one stick broken.
