Description

Château Cheval Blanc 1959
St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classé (A)
Previous owner purchased from Sotheby's 'Cheval Blanc, Yquem and Dom Perignon Treasures Direct from The Cellars' in Hong Kong, 21 May 2010, with new capsules and labels, 'Bouteille rebouchée par le Château en 1985'

Vintage from 28 September to 10 October. An extremely low yield of 20 hl/hectare, the aftermath of the February 1956 frost from which this part of St. Emilion suffered so cruelly. 13% alcohol. In 2007, a very meaty nose. So immense, full and luscious. Flavours of meat and jam. Incredible to the finish. Incidentally, Gaston Vaissière, the old maître de chai, always recommended tasting the 1959 immediately after opening, with no decanting, as he did not think that contact with the air was beneficial for this vintage. In 2011 at the Château, such incredible dimension and layers on the nose. Moroccan mint. Just absolutely fascinating - intellectual and challenging from a vocabulary point of view. Such AMAZING blackberry tastes. So mouth-enveloping and totally mouth-coating. Fabulous harmony of texture, fruit and ripe tannins. Finishes two hours later on a note of prune liqueur. This is one of the best wines Bordeaux has ever produced. Serena Sutcliffe, MW
