The minimalist design of the Ref 5077P-056 dial and the stylised posture of the phoenix evoke an archaic ambience that harks back to ancient Chinese traditions. Deeply rooted in Chinese culture, phoenix is regarded as one of the most sacred animals - it is a mythical bird that never dies and only appears during the reign of a virtuous ruler. In Chinese artwork, phoenix is often paired with the dragon and the symbol is used as a wish for a harmonious marriage for new couple. The wedding dresses worn by the brides in China are often decorated with phoenix. Once the dragon became a totem of the emperor, then the phoenix was also accorded a similar significance to empresses. Phoenix, with its great beauty, is the best embodiment of warmth and prosperity. The present lot brings out the best of the West and the East by masterfully combining Patek Philippe’s magnificent craftsmanship of watchmaking tradition and the symbol of the glorious Chinese heritage, phoenix, in one single timepiece.
