Catalogue Note

Charlotte Newman, more widely known as Mrs. Newman, began her career in 1860s London with the jeweler John Brogden. Known for his work in the archeological and Renaissance revival styles, Brogden exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1867 and 1878, with Mrs. Newman receiving a medaille d’honneur for her contributions. In 1885, she established her own firm, paving the way for women in a largely male-dominated field.
