Description

The rectangular vanity case applied with black enamel at the center and on the edges, further decorated with blue enamel, with textured gold and diamond accents, the thumbpiece set with a cabochon sapphire, the interior fitted with a mirror, two compartments and a lipstick holder, signed Black Starr & Frost; 1930s.
Condition
In good condition. The outside of the case is blue enamel styled to look like lapis lazuli and is not lapis. It displays minor loss mostly concentrated at the corners, one corner which has a slight crack. Similar enamel loss is found in the black near the edges of the case, again, only noticeable upon close inspection under magnification. The rose-cut diamonds are slightly to moderately included and approximately H-I color. The sapphire cabochon on the button to open the compact is a medium very slightly violetish blue with some color zoning and minor inclusions. The mirror inside the compact is in very good condition and clear. The lipstick tube has been cleaned out though there may be some minor remnants of a prior lipstick inside the tube. There are two small compartments inside which upon opening reveal minor to moderate repair work in the form of solder and rivet holes consistent with the attachment of the detailing opposite them on the other side. Gross weight approximately 107 dwts.
