Provenance

Rosemary Crane was born in 1900, an heiress of Crane & Co, now the oldest family-owned company in the United States. Established in 1770, Crane & Co makes cotton-based paper products and has supplied stationary to Eleanor Roosevelt and the Queen of England. Crane paper is used to make the US currency as well as several currencies worldwide.

Rosemary was presented at court in London as a young debutante and travelled extensively in Europe, acquiring a wardrobe that included dresses by Worth and Mario Fortuny. This headpiece was commissioned in Venice to be worn with a Fortuny velvet cloak to a fancy dress party. Rosemary married the Englishman John Maurice Hastings, whose father Percy Hastings had founded the Architectural Review in 1896. The couple bought the Elizabethan manor house, Rainthorpe Hall, in Norfolk where they lived with their four children. Rosemary supported many charities, including the Aldeburgh Festival and the Distressed Gentlefolks Association.
