the screen carved in low relief to one side with flowering and fruiting branches, issuing from garden rocks, fitted into a cloisonné frame and stand, with key-fret border along the sides on a blue ground, the apron with florets and foliate scrolls, with archaistic dragon scrollwork supports, the jade of an even pale celadon tone 

Provenance

John Sparks Ltd., London, 7th July 1953 (£65).

Condition

There is a diagonal 6cm flaw running from the lower central part of the screen and three smaller flaws to the upper right section. There is rubbing to the gilding to various areas of the frame.

Catalogue Note

Table screens of this type, decorated with images of nature, were placed on desks of officials and scholars to serve as sources of inspiration for reflection and as an escape from the duties of officialdom. A set of four screens of this type, carved in shallow relief with flowering plants on one side, the reverse with an inscription, and mounted on cloisonné enamel stands, included in the exhibition A Romance with Jade from the De An Tang collection, Palace Museum, Beijing, 2004, cat. no. 22, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 10th April 2006, lot 1518; a pair was sold in our New York rooms, 19th September 2001, lot 61; and two green jade examples were sold in our New York rooms, the first, from the collection of Mr and Mrs Bernard K. Crawford, 1st/2nd June 1992, lot 63, and the second, 20th October 1989, lot 289.
