Description

  • jade
of flattened hexagonal shape, the tall foot finely carved with two lively chilong in high relief, below a raised band of finely carved taotie, with two further chilong encircling the waisted neck, rising to a flared rim, the stone of an even white tone with some inclusions, wood stand

Condition

There is a very minor (1mm by 0.5mm) chip to the rim and a smaller nick next to this to the rim.

Catalogue Note

Jade vases modelled in the form of archaic bronze gu were popular in the 18th century and were made with various designs and of varying proportions. A hexagonal gu carved with a scaly dragon and chilong, is illustrated in Robert Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 145, and sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 27th November 2007, lot 1546; one from the collection of Sir Ernest Joseph Cassel, was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 1st June 2011, lot 3598; a slightly larger yellow jade example from the collections of William Clayton and Sir John Woolf, was included in the exhibition The Woolf Collection of Chinese Jade, Sotheby’s, London, 2013, cat. no. 27; another, of square section, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum. Jade, vol. 10, Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2011, pl. 77; and a further vase was included in the exhibition A Romance with Jade from the De An Tang Collection, Palace Museum, Beijing, 2004, cat. no. 129.
