Folio (12 1/2 x 8 3/4 in.; 320 x 225 mm.), engraved chiaroscuro title in green and gold, 130 (portraits of Philip 2nd and Maximilian in oval medallion on Dd2 has not been printed) chiaroscuro cuts in text printed (rectos only) from an engraved plate and two color (tan and gold) woodblocks; first 12 leaves with dampstaining on lower right corner (including title) repaired, some browning, spotting, and foxing, offsetting of the plates, last leaves with repairs on lower right corner. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over board; dampstaining and repairs, modern spine label.

Catalogue Note
First edition of the first book illustrated completely in chiaroscuro, with the color printed in two-tone relief block over the etched outlines. Short biographies of the Roman emperors are accompanied by large roundel portrait chiaroscuro prints based on antique Roman coins. The book was simultaneously issued in Latin, German and Italian, followed by French (1559) and Spanish (1560).
