  • Two autograph letters signed, in French. 1820 & 1822

1) 2 pp with integral address leaf stamped "73 Rosoy", (238 x 184 mm), signed "Lafayette", Lagrange, 20 November 1820, to Monsieur Marchand at the Bureau du patriote in Strasbourg. Previously folded, some foxing to address leaf at folds, seal tear with no affect to text. 2) 2 pp with integral address leaf stamped "73 Rosoy Sne & Mne" (235 x 182 mm), Lagrange, 16 May 1822, to Mr Douville, a bookseller in Valence. Previously folded, foxed, some soiling to address leaf, seal tear with small loss to paper but not to text. Tipped-in and bound together in a red straight-grain morocco album gilt, along with a 4-line autograph note signed "Lafayette", Berlin, 11 August 1785, and several pieces of ephemera relating to Lafayette, including engraved portraits and scenes, some hand-colored.

Catalogue Note

The first letter discusses Lafayette's son George Washington Lafayette (1779-1849), reading in part: "[trans] George's defeat in Brioude was very honorable. They used all the means that were found in power and in the awareness of the government against him..." The second letter discusses matters relating to the Neapolitan Revolution of 1820-21, as well as to the actions of the Italian General, Michele Carrascosa, reading in part: "[trans] ...under the circumstances, general Carrascosa musn't engage in projects in France before being sure that he will get the rest that he wants there. I spoke about this with several friends and colleagues, who are of the same opinion..."
