Catalogue Note
Magritte sends to his friend a critic about his poetic book "Le Socle de la Nuit", which he will eventually illustrate.
Magritte uses the letter to comment some of the aphorisms from the book, such as "Le Néant est la seule grande merveille du Monde - [The Void is the only marvel in the world]" or "Nous lançons la pensée sous forme de terre boueuse - [We're throwing ideas as mud]"explaining that ideas always look like the world. He then gets more personal: "Ma pensée dans ce qu’elle a d’insoumis, c'est-à-dire de liberté, ne s’accordera jamais avec un usage où les corpuscules et les élardons sont censés possibles dans la poésie. Heureusement, notre pensée est presque toujours insoumise à un tel usage">
André Bosmans was a very close friend of Magritte and exchanged more than 400 letters.
