Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate despite being less bright and less orange in reality. Good overall condition. There gilding is very slightly rubbed and tarnished. The pair of chenets has been regilt. There are traces of rust on the irons. Impressive and unusual scale for this pair of chenets. Nice quality of chasing.

Catalogue Note

This impressive pair of andirons can be compared to models by the bronziers Jean-Louis Prieur and Quentin-Claude Pitoin. A chenet with similar dimensions but slight variations and featuring the same obelisk and vase with flaming finial is illustrated in the book by Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, p. 200, fig. 3.14.9.
