Catalogue Note

The model for this portrait  of Henri II (1519-1559) is an alabaster bust in the Louvre museum (inv. no. MR 1635). It was formerly in the collection of the Cardinal Richelieu, together with the portrait busts of Charles IX and Henri III (Louvre museum, inv. no. MR 1634 and MR 1636). Then in the collection of the Duke of Orléans, the three busts were on display in his galleries of the Palais-Royal and later in his castle of Raincy. Saved by Alexandre Lenoir from the Revolutionary destructions, the busts entered the collections of what became the Louvre museum.
