Catalogue Note

This inkstand can be linked to a set of precious pieces of ornate furniture and objects with original marquetry designs, including materials such as mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, stained horn, copper and sometimes tin. The technique seems to be the same for all these items, and the asymmetrical patterns, evoking exotic and Chinese themes are reminiscenct Jean Berain's drawings, including grotesques, birds and foliate scrolls.
