  • tortoiseshell, gold
two Neapolitan examples, one, circa 1730, rectangular inlaid in gold with chinoiserie subjects, 7.9cm., 3 1/8 in. wide ; the other, circa 1760, rectangular with lobed sides, the lid inlaid in gold with a pastoral subject, gilt-metal mounts, 8cm., 3 1/8 in. wide ; a circular French blond tortoiseshell bonbonnière, circa 1780, with pellet ornament and beaded gold mounts, discharge mark of Henry Clavel (fleur de jasmin), 6.2cm., 2 1/2 in. diameter; and an upright oval blond example inlaid with bands of gold piqué, engraved gold mounts, 6.4cm., 2 1/2 in wide

Condition

1. base loose, and other sides glued, mounts not fitting properly. left side panel cracked. gold applied ornament lifting. pique decoration in good condition. 2. some chips to tortoiseshell, gold applied ornament to base lifting. pique decoration in good condition. 3. gold mounts lifting, some chips to base rim. 4. cracked and reglued. chips to base rim. some gold ornament missing. gold ornament to base reglued.
