Catalogue Note
The original example of this tureen was ordered by Count Charles de Lariboisiere in 1851. Born in 1798, he became Chamberlain under Napoleon I and was depute for Ille de Villaine between 1829 and 1835. de Lariboisiere became Pair de France in 1835 and Senateur in 1852 for which position the tureen was probably commissioned. It originally formed part of a set ordered from Charles-Nicolas Odiot which included a large oval tureen, with bull-shaped handles, and four circular tureens, (casseroles couvertes sur rechaud) with differing finials. It was exhibited by Odiot at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, winning a medal for its impressive structure and quality.
