Description

  • porcelain
of lobed pentagonal form, painted with a Kauffahrtei scene, within a quatrefoil frame embellished with purple scrolls, gilt-scroll border to the rim, the reverse with small flower sprigs, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, gilded numeral 55., 15.1cm., 5 7/8 in. diam., together with a lozenge-shaped Meissen dish, later decorated with chinoiserie figures on a pedestal, gilt scroll borders, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, gilded numeral 34., 17.2cm., 6 3/4 in. wide

Condition

The pentagonal dish is in overall good condition, there are two patches of wear to the enamels of the painted scene. To the lozenge-shaped dish, there is considerable scratching to the surface of the well of the dish and to the painted figures. Both with some minor wear to gilded borders.

A very similar five-sided dish with a turquoise ground to the reverse was in the Hoffmeister collection, sold at Bonhams London, 25th November 2009, lot 108, published in the collection catalogue vol. II, Hamburg, 1999, pp. 388-389, no. 259b where the present example is also mentioned.
