Catalogue Note

This fine panel comes from a larger textile that was divided in to several sections that are now in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Cologne, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (04.1640) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (46.136.102). The textile depicts Christ immediately after the Resurrection at the moment when he is recognized by Mary Magdalene. This repeating design may have been used as a decorative border or for a dalmatic. One half of a dalmatic made entirely of this fabric is in the collection of the Musée des Tissus in Lyons, France.
