A CHINESE EXPORT BLACK AND GILT LACQUER BUREAU BOOKCASE MID-18TH CENTURY

Exported from China to be sold on the European market, this bureau bookcase mixes an English form with exotic, sumptuous lacquer panels. The present example is almost identical in form to two others: one sold Sotheby's New York, October 26, 2012, lot 241 and another illustrated Lanto Synge, Mallett Millenium, London, 1999, fig. 149. They share the same pediment, overall form, and fretwork windows to the interior.
