Catalogue Note
Byron's correspondent in this letter - which was written whilst Byron was staying with his mother in Southwell - was the daughter of his London landlady, Mrs Elizabeth Massingberd. The Massingberds helped Byron to raise money by acting as intermediaries with moneylenders. This left them in a difficult position when Byron did not honour his debts; over the next few years they had to pester him repeatedly for repayments, and by May 1811 they were in danger of being imprisoned for Byron's outstanding debts.
