Catalogue Note

THE MOST NOTORIOUS OF FORMAN/WISE FORGERIES.

"By forging Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese '1847', Wise and Forman were tampering with the most celebrated literary love story of Victorian England." (Collins, John, The Two Forgers (1992), p.105)

Browning's Sonnets were first published in the second edition of her Poems which appeared in 1850. The "history" of this supposed earlier edition, which apparently existed in only a few copies printed on the instruction of her husband and with the help of Mary Russell Mitford, was concocted by the forgers and included by Edmund Gosse in his introduction to an edition of Browning's poetry published in late 1894.
