A few years before his death, Pope told Joseph Spence that he and William Pulteney, had written a "ballad on the rabbit-woman" (see Spence, Anecdotes, observations, and characters, of books and men (1858) p.216), "almost certainly" (Foxon) The Discovery.

Mary Toft, a destitute woman from Surrey, became a national sensation in 1726 when she claimed to have given birth to a number of animal parts, including several rabbits. Eventually she admitted the hoax, causing great humiliation for the doctors who had been convinced. This interesting group includes pamphlets by Swiss surgeon Nathanael St. André, who was taken in by Toft, and the skeptical Cyriacus Ahlers, who was dispatched to examine Toft at Guildford by the King.
