Catalogue Note

A RARE LETTER WITH THE STRONG SIGNATURES OF BOTH MARY AND HER HUSBAND, IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. Philip and Mary married in July 1554, but Philip left England in September 1555 after Mary's phantom pregnancy, never to return. This letter has his distinctive English signature; on Spanish documents he signed himself "Yo el Rey". Paget had been a principal negotiator of Mary's marriage and was in high favour, hence, no doubt, this request for him to officiate at an important ceremonial function. The two men being elevated to the Garter were Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy (1528-1580), a cousin of Philip of Spain who was appointed Governor of the Netherlands in 1555, and William Howard, Lord Howard of Effingham (1510-1573), Lord High Admiral of England.
