Catalogue Note
As noted by Hart-Davis, the picture shows "a small W.E. Henley attempting to extinguish the flame of a large candle bearing R.L.S.'s features. Refers to Henley's attack on Stevenson in the Pall Mall Magazine of Dec 1901".
The article within the Pall Mall Magazine (pp. 505-514) was an extensive review of Graham Balfour's biography of Stevenson: The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson.
"...Yet am I discontented, dissatisfied, still looking for more. I daresay the feeling is personal; that I cannot judge equably, for I know too much. So be it... I read; and as I read I am oppressed by the thought that here is Lewis Stevenson very much as he may well have wanted to be, but that here is not Lewis Stevenson at all. At any rate, here is not the Lewis Stevenson I knew..."
Beerbohm's illustration was printed within Tatler on 4 December 1901 entitled 'The Henley-Stevenson Controversy'.
