Catalogue Note
Lind's classic clinical trial in 1747 while serving as a naval surgeon on H.M.S. Salisbury demonstrated that citrus juices could prevent scurvy among sailors, and led to the eventual elimination of the disease from the British navy. The nickname "limey" for sailors in the Royal Navy can be traced to Lind's discovery.
