Catalogue Note

A UNIQUE INSIGHT INTO THE STRUCTURE OF ALLIED ARMIES IN THE AGE OF MARLBOROUGH. The collection includes Orders of Battle for Marlborough's great victories at Blenheim and Malplaquet, as well as numerous sieges and campaigns in the Low Countries and elsewhere. There are also eight Orders of Battle for William III's wars against France, including one relating to the Irish campaign of 1690 that culminated at the Battle of the Boyne, and two relating to the inconclusive Battle of Steenkerque (1692).

These Orders of Battle were evidently produced shortly after the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. The paper and handwriting are consistent with an early 18th century date. They are attractively written, carefully laid out on the page, and give a remarkably detailed insight into the disposition of allied troops over a twenty year period.
