Catalogue Note
A RARE CORRECTED PROOF. 'The Cuckoo and the Nightingale', a modernisation of the 14th century poem by John Clanvowe (also known as 'The Book of Cupid' and then widely attributed to Chaucer), was written by Wordsworth in December 1801. The current set of proofs were for the poem's first appearance in print, in R.H. Horne's The Poems of Geoffrey Chaucer, Modernised (1841).
