"To a Cat", autograph working manuscript with corrections to four lines, 42 lines in seven stanzas, signed at end, seemingly an early version of the poem lacking the final four stanzas of the published text, 2 pages, text on rectos only, blue paper, 4to, c.1893; "The Centenary of the Battle of the Nile', autograph working manuscript with revisions, including two cancelled lines, 32 lines, signed at end, 2 pages, text on rectos only, blue paper, 4to, c.1898; "The Lake of Gaube", autograph working manuscript with corrections to at least 14 lines, 70 lines, 3 pages, contemporary pagination, text on rectos only, blue paper, 4to, later foliation in red crayon (6-8), c.1899; "A Counsel", autograph working manuscript of a sonnet on the French Republic, heavily revised including cancelled drafts of five lines, dated 28 September 1869, with, on the verso, early draft fragments of the sonnet "The Augurs" with cancels, revisions, and possible rhyme words, altogether 2 pages,4to, 1869; "In a Rosary", autograph working manuscript with revisions to at least 13 lines, 40 lines in 8 stanzas, 2 pages, text on rectos only, blue paper, 4to, later foliation (23-24) in red crayon, c.1900; each leaf individually mounted on guards, in green morocco gilt by Riviere and Sons, inside dentelles, gilt lettering on upper cover, spine in six compartments; occasional light soiling

Catalogue Note

'To a Cat' was published in The Athenaeum in December 1893 then collected in Astrophel and Other Poems the following year. 'The Centenary of the Battle of the Nile' was published in The Anglo-Saxon Review in June 1899 and then collected in A Channel Passage and Other Poems (1904). 'The Lake of Gaube' was first published in The Bookman in October 1899 and also collected in A Channel Passage. 'A Counsel' and 'The Augurs' were both published in The Examiner in April-May 1873 and then collected in Songs of Two Nations (1875) as numbers IX and X of the sonnet sequence Dirae. 'In a Rosary' was first published in A Channel Passage.
