Catalogue Note
Shelley's inspiration for Epipsychidion was the young Theresa ("Emilia") Viviani, daughter of the Governor of Pisa, who had been introduced to Mary and Claire in November 1820, and then Shelley himself in December. Viviani was confined to living in a convent until a suitable marriage could be found for her, and aroused great sympathy in the Shelleys, who sought to end "the discomfort of her captivity" (Shelley's letter to Claire, 2 January 1821).
Shelley had the poem published anonymously in an issue of only 100 copies for circulation amongst a few of his circle. However, shortly after publication, the poet became disenchanted with both his subject and his poem, and attempted to have the remaining copies suppressed. Writing to John Gisborne in 1822, he remarked, "The 'Episychidion' I cannot look at; the person whom it celebrates was a cloud instead of a Juno."
