Description

  • Lacquer, giltwood, walnut
  • 68cm. high, 80cm. wide, 48cm. deep; 2ft. 2¾in., 2ft. 7½in., 1ft. 7in.
the tray with high rims decorated with chinoiserie landscape above scrolled cabriole legs ending in hoof feet, the whole carved with stylised scrolls and foliage; decoration refreshed

Condition

This table is in fine conserved condition, having having been regilt and had the lacquer refreshed There are minor losses to gilding, mainly to edges and joints. The legs have been reblocked and one has had repair to ear. There are signs of woodworm that appears to be no longer active. Marks and scratches consistent with age and use. The tray top with some dust dirt accumulation to edges and border. A very elegant table.

The pair to the present tavolino a vassoio was probably the one formerly in the Collection of Giovanni and Gabriella Barilla, sold these rooms, 14 March 2012, lot 74 (£17,500). This, in turn, might be the one formerly in the collection of Count Franco Cella Bruni (fig. 1). 

A related Piedmontese table lacquered in green, yellow and blue also depicting chinoiserie scenes in arte povera, was sold from the estate of the late Giuseppe Rossi, in these Rooms, Vol. I, 10 March 1999, lot 28 (£70,000).
