Condition

The canvas has been lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very little intervention, save for some scattered spot retouchings in the upper left corner and a handful of minor retouchings along the lower margin. In overall very good condition.

Catalogue Note

This composition finds its prototype in Giordano's painting of the same subject in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rennes, and would also appear to take inspiration from the painting of The Circumcision in the Palazzo Reale, Madrid, such as the bearded figure on the left and the candle bearers.1
