Description

  • Virgin and Child
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • Italian, Siena, second half 15th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, notably to Christ's proper right thigh and around the base and to the Virgin's face. Some splits have been filled, including one running down the Virgin's body and the terrasse. A section of the Virgin's proper right arm at the back was carved separately and is held in place with metal pins. The polychromy of the Virgin's cloak is largely lost, the wood has later been varnished, giving the statue an attractive uniform colour. There is some evidence of past worming, in particular to the back.

Catalogue Note

The softly flowing drapery and relaxed contrapposto of this enchanting Virgin and Child find parallels in the work of the Sienese sculptor Neroccio di Martolommeo di Benedetto (1447-1500). Compare also the long, parallel folds of earlier works from Siena such as the Virgin in San Pietro in Volterra (Schubring, op. cit., fig. 29).
