Ce dessin ainsi que les deux lots suivants sont des études préparatoires pour trois portraits du Maharadjah d'Indore que Bernard Boutet de Monvel réalisa entre 1929 et 1934. Lors d'un séjour à Paris en 1929, le jeune prince héritier commanda tout d'abord au peintre un portrait en pied vêtu d'un costume occidental. Après être monté sur le trône d'Indore en 1930, il s'adresse à nouveau à Boutet de Monvel et lui demande d'exécuter en 1933 un portrait en costume traditionnel. Après avoir livré ce second portrait en 1934, Bernard Boutet de Monvel réalisera de lui même un dernier tableau du Maharadjah le représentant de profil.
The offered lot and the two following lots are preparatory drawings for three portraits of the Maharajah of Indore executed by Bernard Boutet de Monvel between 1929 and 1934. While in Paris, in 1929, the young prince commissioned to the painter a portrait in western attire. After he had ascended to the throne of Indore in 1930, he then commissioned a new portrait in traditional attire. After Boutet de Monvel completed the second portrait, he decided to execute a last portrait of the Maharajah in profile.
