with a trellis splat, shaped arms and turned tapering legs

Provenance

Probably acquired by Lord George Cavendish, 1st Earl of Burlington (1754–1834) of the second creation or his wife Lady Elizabeth Compton (1780-1782) for Compton Place, Eastbourne, Sussex.

Condition

Paintwork tired and scuffed but appears contemporary with the chairs construction. Renovated 1966 according to an inked inscription to the underside of one seat rail. with a modern printed gingham seat cushion, the underside of seat rail inscribed 'Painting renovated 5 chairs Feb 1966 A. E Greenwood Chesterfield', although this armchair appears to have original painted decoration. One from the original set photographed in the Library at Compton Place, Eastbourne in the late 19th or early 20th century;
