Provenance
Commissioned by Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire (1920-2014)
Literature
The Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth, The House, London, 2002, p. 145, part illustrated in her office.
The Duchess writes (op. cit. p. 144), 'There was some wood left over [from making my Office bookshelves] and after a few weeks a magnificent desk appeared from nowhere. There I sit every day, marvelling that it, too, is a Chatsworth product'. The desk was a collaborative affair, the Duchess worked with Sean Doxey and John Oliver on the design. When complete it was French-polished by John Thompson.
Condition
Generally very good. Leather top with some scuffs and wear from use. Mahogany well finished but again from age and use. The drawers could do with a stop to at the rear to stop them pushing through. A superbly, lovingly made piece of reproduction furniture.
