Catalogue Note
Morel & Seddon may seem an unlikely attribution as these chairs appear to be a departure from the grandiose Grecian and neo-classical style usually associated with their workshop. The great rosewood and parcel-gilt suite of seat furniture commissioned by the 6th Duke for the Salon at Devonshire House and now installed in the Library at Chatsworth exemplifies their work in this style. However, their work at Windsor illustrates, in part, their familiarity with a new style, referencing early English furniture within Jeffry Wyatville's 'Gothic' enhancements. Additionally the contrast of a richly figured or exotic timber with fine gilding is a hallmark of their work.
