Description

  • Two Dogs at Play
  • white marble, on a veined grey marble base
  • British, first half 19th century

Provenance

Bequeathed to Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire (1920-2014) by James Lees-Milne (1908-1997)

Literature

The Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth, The House, London, 2002, p. 187, the Duchess writes, 'James Lees-Milne left me the marble dogs [formerly installed in the Tapestry Gallery at Chatsworth] by an anonymous sculptor. They are the kind of furry mongrels you see in every French village. These two are playing for ever, one standing over its friend, open-mouthed and tail wagging.'

Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The ears of the dog at the top appear to have been reattached. There are several naturally occurring inclusions to the marble, including to the upper dog's snout and the lower dog's face. There is some veining to the marble consistent with the material, notably to the base and to the lower dog's back. There are a few chips and abrasions, including to the lower dog's proper right ear, his proper right front paw, and very minor chips to the high points of the upper dog's fur and tail and the lower dog's head. There are various dirt marks, in particular to the lower dog's head. There are a few chips and abrasions to the grey marble base.
